The term “raindrop therapy" may generate thoughts of the soothing pitter-patter of rain or the unique healing powers of water. This massage treatment is gaining popularity for its effectiveness in helping to rejuvenate the mind and body with the combined use of essential oils and massage.
As more people are turning to natural remedies made possible by essential oils, raindrop therapy is becoming an attractive, as well as effective, treatment. Celebrities have also helped popularize these methods. Among those advocating for essential oils is Gwyneth Paltrow, whose newsletter-turned-online retail site Goop sells wellness and beauty products and touts the advantages of using such oils. Daphne Oz, an author and co-host of The Chew, wrote an article called “The Nose Knows Good Health” for Oprah.com, similarly espouses the benefits of these treatments.
These oils don’t just have enticing scents, such as lavender or rose, they also can provide physical and psychological benefits. Each type of essential oil has its own purpose: peppermint assists digestion; lavender relieves stress; chamomile induces relaxation; and lemon improves moods and aids headaches.
So, how are essential oils used in raindrop therapy and how does it work?
What is Raindrop Therapy?
D. Gray Young, founder and CEO of Young Living Essential Oils, drew from his experience with Native American wellness traditions when he developed the raindrop technique. The therapy combines aromatherapy and reflexology in a multi-step process to improve physical, mental and emotional health through rejuvenation, relaxation, and harmony.
The healing process uses seven pure therapeutic-grade, antimicrobial essential oils:
Basil: relaxes muscles and reduces mental fatigue
Cypress: helps the circulatory system
Marjoram: relieves muscle pain and spasms
Oregano: stimulates the immune system
Peppermint: calms the digestive system
Thyme: reduces bacteria present in the body
Wintergreen: alleviates joint and muscle pains
Additionally, the therapy includes two essential blends, Aroma Siez and Valor II, and two massage oils, Ortho Ease and V-6.
The five-step approach begins with preparation, during which the licensed masseuse creates a calming atmosphere by dimming the lights and blocking out sounds and distractions.
This entire process is meant to rejuvenate the mind, balance the body, and nurture harmony, producing multiple physical, mental, and emotional benefits.
Next, a massage table is set up and the recipient is made comfortable. Their body energy is balanced when the Valor II is applied to the recipient’s shoulders, bare feet, and palms, enabling them to feel a connection of energy.
During the third step—known as roll and release—oregano is placed in the left and right palms as a massage is given to the spinal reflex points located on each foot. In step four, which is the spinal application of essential oils, oregano is dropped on the spine and the masseuse completes feathering and fanning strokes down the back. Then, the remaining essential oils and blends are applied to the spine, each followed by the feathering and fanning sequence. This allows the body to take advantage of all the benefits the oils can bring.
To complete raindrop therapy, the masseuse will apply V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex or Ortho Ease to the palms, shoulder, and back if the recipient is experiencing discomfort. White Angelica is applied to the shoulders and hands for the recipient to smell for 5 to 10 minutes. Finish the healing process by having the recipient drink plenty of water.
This entire process is meant to rejuvenate the mind, balance the body, and nurture harmony, producing multiple physical, mental, and emotional benefits.
