As we embrace the full bloom of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a time for renewal and fresh beginnings. Many of us practice Spring cleaning in our homes, preparing for the newness that the season brings. Interestingly, this time also coincides with Ramadan, a time when Muslims not only fast from food, but also from negative thought patterns. This alignment of practices serves as a reminder that Spring cleaning isn’t just for our physical space, but also for our bodies and minds.

Spring offers the perfect opportunity to detoxify, cleansing ourselves of toxins and dead cells. If you’re looking for simple, effective ways to support your body’s natural detox process, here are three practices that are easy to incorporate into your routine:

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a simple yet powerful Ayurvedic practice that’s been used for centuries. It’s known to freshen breath better than mouthwash, prevent cavities, and pull toxins from your mouth and brain that floss and mouthwash simply can't reach.

To try it, place ½ to 1 tsp of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around for 5-15 minutes. A couple of important tips:

Do not swallow the oil, as it contains the toxins your body is releasing.

Do not spit it down the drain—it can clog pipes. Instead, spit the oil in the toilet or trash.

Though you can use other oils for this practice, I prefer coconut oil. It's easy to manage, has antimicrobial properties, and helps kill bacteria.

Here’s the coconut oil I recommend for its organic, unrefined, cold-pressed quality—and it’s affordable:

Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil

Gua Sha and Jade Rolling

Gua Sha and jade rolling are both ancient practices from Asia, designed to reduce swelling, ease muscle tension, and help lymphatic drainage, especially in the face. These tools work wonders for boosting circulation and relieving puffiness. When used correctly, they can reduce redness and inflammation—plus, they feel amazing when stored in the freezer.

To get the best results, always use a carrier oil (I recommend carrot seed or rosehip oil) so the tools glide smoothly over your skin.

If you’d like to explore these detoxifying tools further, here are some recommendations:

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is a full-body practice that promotes detoxification by removing dead skin cells and stimulating lymphatic drainage. It only takes about 15 minutes and can be done right before your shower. The technique is simple—use a dry brush in circular motions starting at your head and moving downward toward your feet. This boosts circulation, helps with weight loss, and can even reduce cellulite with regular use.

The key is to avoid using oils or moisture. The brush should have bristles with nodes that massage your skin as you move it.

Here’s a brush I recommend:

While these practices can help you feel rejuvenated, don’t forget the fundamentals of detoxing: drinking plenty of water, moving your body (through exercise, yoga, or even walking), and practicing mindfulness or meditation.

By focusing on consistent, healthy habits, you’ll see more lasting results than from short-term fads like crash diets or extreme juicing. Remember, the path to wellness is about consistency—not intensity.

I hope these tips help you feel refreshed and rejuvenated as you enter this season of renewal.
