About 70 percent of visits to the doctor are related to stress, anxiety, or depression.
Physical Symptoms And Stress
People go to cardiologists with chest pain or palpitations; neurologists with feelings of being dizzy, lightheaded, off-balance, or headachy; gastroenterologists with stomach pains or elimination problems.
They are often left in disbelief when all tests prove negative, thinking, “How can such real and profound symptoms be all in my head?” This is often why patients seek alternative treatments, as they are looking for more control and an added sense of responsibility over their lives, rather than a simple prescription for pills.
Studies show that nearly 60 percent of Americans seek the help of a mental health professional at some point in their lives, but the 40 percent who don’t may, in fact, need it more. It is dismissive and disrespectful to be told, or to think, that it's “all in your head.”
Find Strength in Healing
There is strength and wisdom to be found in obtaining the appropriate help. No one should feel weak for seeking assistance on the path to recovery. Many successful doctors, lawyers, business leaders, performers, and politicians have sought professional guidance over the course of their lives.
In some ways, psychological problems are more painful, potentially debilitating, and often perceived as something to “just get over,” especially when compared with physical issues. One could strongly argue that if people received the proper psychological help, our health care costs would significantly shrink.
